Company Overview

Palo Alto Networks is the world's largest pure-play cybersecurity company. It provides an integrated platform covering network security, cloud security, and security operations. Nir Zuk, a pioneer of stateful inspection firewalls, founded it in 2005 in Santa Clara, California. The company now generates over $8 billion in annual revenue and serves more than 80,000 customers.

There are three integrated platforms. Network Security includes next-generation firewalls (physical, virtual, and cloud-delivered), Prisma SASE, and Prisma SD-WAN. These secure enterprise networks, branch offices, and remote workers. Palo Alto's firewalls were the first to identify and control applications regardless of port or protocol. That set a new standard. Prisma Access delivers cloud-based zero-trust network access, replacing legacy VPNs.

Cloud Security runs through Prisma Cloud, a cloud-native application protection platform. It handles cloud security posture management, workload protection, infrastructure-as-code scanning, container and Kubernetes security, and API security. It works across AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, and Oracle Cloud.

Security Operations is built on Cortex. This includes XSIAM, XDR, XSOAR, and Xpanse for attack surface management. Cortex XSIAM is the most ambitious product. It uses AI to reimagine the security operations center by consolidating SIEM, XDR, SOAR, and threat intelligence into one AI-driven platform. Picture a security team drowning in alerts from dozens of tools. XSIAM aims to collapse all that into a single system that handles most of the analysis automatically.

The company sells to enterprises, government agencies, and service providers of all sizes. A key strategy is platformization, which means getting customers to consolidate multiple security tools onto one platform. That drives cross-selling and bigger deals.

Revenue has shifted toward subscriptions and support, which now make up the majority. Annual recurring revenue from next-generation security exceeds $4 billion, growing over 30% year over year. Gross margins are about 74%, and operating margins keep improving.

Under CEO Nikesh Arora since 2018, Palo Alto Networks has transformed from a hardware firewall company into a comprehensive, AI-driven security platform. Acquisitions like Demisto, Bridgecrew, Cider Security, and Talon Cyber Security have all contributed to building out that platform vision.
