Company Overview

Palo Alto Networks, Inc. is the world's largest pure-play cybersecurity company, providing an integrated platform of network security, cloud security, and security operations solutions. Founded in 2005 by Nir Zuk, a pioneer of stateful inspection firewalls and intrusion prevention systems, and headquartered in Santa Clara, California, Palo Alto Networks has grown to over $8 billion in annual revenue and serves more than 80,000 customers globally.

The company operates three integrated platforms. Network Security encompasses next-generation firewalls (physical, virtual, and cloud-delivered), Prisma SASE (Secure Access Service Edge), and Prisma SD-WAN, securing enterprise networks, branch offices, and remote workers. Palo Alto Networks' firewalls were the first to identify and control applications regardless of port or protocol, setting a new standard for network security. Prisma Access provides cloud-delivered zero-trust network access, replacing legacy VPNs.

Cloud Security is delivered through Prisma Cloud, a comprehensive cloud-native application protection platform (CNAPP) that secures code-to-cloud workflows. Prisma Cloud provides cloud security posture management (CSPM), cloud workload protection (CWP), infrastructure-as-code scanning, container and Kubernetes security, and API security. It supports multi-cloud environments across AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, and Oracle Cloud.

Security Operations is anchored by Cortex, which includes XSIAM (Extended Security Intelligence and Automation Management), XDR (Extended Detection and Response), XSOAR (Security Orchestration, Automation, and Response), and Xpanse (attack surface management). Cortex XSIAM represents the company's most ambitious product, using AI to fundamentally reimagine the security operations center by consolidating SIEM, XDR, SOAR, and threat intelligence into a single AI-driven platform.

Palo Alto Networks targets enterprises, government agencies, and service providers of all sizes. Its go-to-market strategy includes direct sales, channel partners, and managed security service providers. The company has pursued an aggressive platformization strategy, encouraging customers to consolidate multiple point security solutions onto the Palo Alto Networks platform, driving significant cross-selling and higher deal values.

The company's business model has shifted toward recurring revenue through subscriptions and support, which now represent the majority of revenue. Annual recurring revenue (ARR) from next-generation security exceeds $4 billion, growing at over 30% year over year. Gross margins are approximately 74%, and operating margins have expanded as subscription scale improves.

Palo Alto Networks has acquired dozens of companies to build its platform, including Demisto (SOAR), Bridgecrew (infrastructure-as-code security), Cider Security (application security), and Talon Cyber Security (enterprise browser). Under CEO Nikesh Arora's leadership since 2018, the company has executed a disciplined transformation from a hardware-centric firewall vendor to a comprehensive, AI-driven security platform.
