Company Overview

Snowflake is a cloud data platform that provides data warehousing, data lake, data engineering, data science, and data sharing through one unified architecture. Benoit Dageville, Thierry Cruanes, and Marcin Zukowski founded it in 2012 in Bozeman, Montana. They designed it from the ground up for the cloud, separating storage, compute, and services into layers that scale independently.

The Snowflake Data Cloud lets organizations pull data from all over into a single platform where they can query, analyze, and share it without moving data around. You can spin up virtual warehouses of any size on demand. There's almost no maintenance required. It runs on AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud. And Secure Data Sharing lets organizations share live data with partners without copying files. Imagine a healthcare company sharing de-identified patient data with a research partner in real time. That's the kind of thing Snowflake makes possible.

Use cases span traditional data warehousing, real-time data pipelines, data science, privacy-preserving data clean rooms for healthcare and finance, and cybersecurity analytics with massive log processing. The Snowflake Marketplace offers third-party datasets and apps that customers can access directly within their environment.

Snowflake sells to organizations of all sizes, from data-driven startups to the largest enterprises and government agencies. The pricing model is consumption-based: you pay per second for the compute resources you actually use. That's different from most SaaS companies that charge flat subscription fees.

Product revenue, which represents actual platform usage, drives about 95% of total revenue. Net revenue retention has historically exceeded 130%, meaning existing customers keep spending more. Gross margins run around 68-70%, lower than pure SaaS peers because the business is compute-intensive.

On the AI front, Snowflake built Cortex, a managed AI and ML service native to the platform. Customers can build and run AI models directly on their Snowflake data without moving it anywhere. Snowpark provides developer frameworks for Python, Java, and Scala. Arctic is Snowflake's own open-source large language model.

With roughly $3.4 billion in product revenue and over 10,000 customers, including nearly 750 of the Forbes Global 2000, Snowflake has established itself as the dominant independent data cloud platform.
