Palantir builds data integration and analytics platforms for government agencies and commercial organizations. Peter Thiel, Alex Karp, and others founded it in 2003 in Denver, Colorado. The original purpose was to help US intelligence agencies integrate and analyze data for counterterrorism.
Two platforms anchor the business. Palantir Gotham serves government and defense. Intelligence analysts and military operators use it to integrate, visualize, and analyze enormous amounts of structured and unstructured data. It supports mission planning, threat detection, supply chain analysis, and operational decisions for agencies including the US Army, CIA, and NSA.
Palantir Foundry is the commercial platform. It serves enterprises across healthcare, financial services, energy, manufacturing, and telecom. Foundry acts as a unified operating system for data. Organizations integrate sources, build pipelines, develop machine learning models, and create operational applications in a governed, secure environment. The goal is to transform raw enterprise data into something you can actually make decisions with.
The Artificial Intelligence Platform, launched in 2023, has become the fastest-growing product. AIP lets organizations deploy large language models and AI agents on their own data within Palantir's security framework. Instead of sending sensitive data to external AI providers, enterprises and agencies can run generative AI directly on their proprietary data with full access controls and audit trails. Think of a bank wanting to use AI for fraud analysis but unable to send transaction data to a third party. AIP solves that problem.
Revenue splits roughly 55% government and 45% commercial. The US government is the largest single customer segment. Commercial growth has accelerated significantly since AIP launched, helped by an innovative boot camp strategy where potential customers experience hands-on workshops that compress sales cycles.
Annual revenue is approximately $2.9 billion with gross margins around 82%. Palantir hit GAAP profitability in 2023 and has maintained it since. The business model blends subscription platform fees with professional services, though the services share keeps decreasing as the platform becomes more self-service.
The competitive edge lies in Palantir's ontology framework. It creates a semantic layer that maps real-world objects and their relationships, letting AI operate on business logic rather than raw data tables. With roughly 4,000 employees, Palantir occupies a unique position bridging government intelligence and commercial AI.
