Expensify kills the expense report. David Barrett founded the company in 2008. It went public in 2021 and keeps a distributed team with roots in Portland and San Francisco.
Anyone who has filed expenses knows the pain. Save the receipt. Lose the receipt. Type numbers into a spreadsheet. Wait weeks to get paid back. Expensify made that whole chore almost disappear.
The trick is a feature called SmartScan. Snap a photo of a receipt. The app reads it, pulls the amount and vendor, and files it for you. Do it right after lunch and the report basically writes itself. The company slogan captures the vibe. Expense reports that do themselves.
Expensify grew from that simple hook into a broader money platform. It offers corporate cards, bill pay, and travel booking. A small business can run its spending, reimbursements, and card program in one app.
The company famously grows through its users. An employee uses it at one job, likes it, and brings it to the next. That bottom up spread kept marketing costs low for years.
Revenue runs around $150 million a year, and the company is profitable. Growth slowed as the market matured. Expensify remains a rare consumer grade tool inside the dull world of corporate finance.
