Company overview

ServiceNow provides a cloud platform for digital workflow automation, IT service management, and business process orchestration. Fred Luddy founded it in 2004 in Santa Clara, California. It has grown into one of the largest and fastest-growing enterprise SaaS companies, pulling in over $10 billion in annual revenue.

The core Now Platform connects disparate processes across an organization onto one unified system. IT Service Management was the original product and still leads the market. It handles incident management, problem management, change management, and service catalogs. IT Operations Management adds AIOps, event management, and cloud provisioning.

But ServiceNow has pushed well beyond IT. HR Service Delivery digitizes the employee experience from onboarding to offboarding. Customer Service Management provides case management and field service. Security Operations automates incident response and vulnerability management. Governance, Risk, and Compliance streamlines regulatory processes. App Engine lets business users build custom workflow applications with low-code tools.

The target market is large enterprises and government organizations, with heavy concentration in the Fortune 500. Implementation happens through partners like Deloitte, Accenture, and KPMG. The land-and-expand model works exceptionally well here. Customers typically start with IT service management, then add more workflow products over time. That drives net revenue retention rates consistently above 125%.

Subscriptions run on annual or multi-year contracts. Gross margins top 80%, and operating margins keep expanding with scale. ServiceNow's premium positioning lets it command some of the highest valuation multiples in enterprise software, reflecting strong growth, high retention, and mission-critical positioning.

AI plays a central role through Now Assist, which embeds generative AI across the platform. It powers case summarization, code generation, virtual agent conversations, and search optimization. The goal is to make every workflow smarter and more automated.

Under CEO Bill McDermott's leadership since 2019, ServiceNow has transformed from an IT-centric tool into a broad enterprise platform. Acquisitions like Element AI, Lightstep, and Hitch Works have strengthened AI, observability, and talent intelligence. With over 22,000 employees and roughly 8,100 enterprise customers, ServiceNow has positioned itself as the operating system for the modern enterprise.
