Vertex is a tax technology company. It provides cloud-based and on-premises software that automates indirect tax compliance, calculation, reporting, and data management for businesses operating across complex multi-jurisdictional tax environments. The Berger family founded it in 1978 in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania. It's one of the oldest tax technology companies around and has successfully transitioned from a traditional software vendor to a cloud-first SaaS platform.
The core platform automates the calculation of sales, use, value-added, and other indirect taxes across more than 300 jurisdictions globally. Vertex O Series, the flagship product, plugs directly into ERP systems like SAP, Oracle, Microsoft Dynamics, and Workday. It also connects with e-commerce platforms like Shopify, Salesforce Commerce Cloud, and Adobe Commerce to calculate tax in real time at the point of transaction. Additional capabilities cover tax data management, exemption certificate management, returns and filing automation, and tax analytics.
The content library is a core competitive moat. It's a continuously maintained database of tax rates, rules, jurisdictional boundaries, and product taxability matrices, kept current by a team of in-house tax professionals and data scientists. Indirect tax compliance is enormously complex. Thousands of overlapping jurisdictions with rules that change constantly. That complexity creates high switching costs and steady demand for Vertex's solutions.
About 4,800 customers use the platform, including over half of the Fortune 500. Retail, manufacturing, technology, telecom, and financial services are the primary verticals. Annual revenue is roughly $600 million. Cloud and subscription revenue grow at double-digit rates and now represent the majority. Gross margins sit around 68%. About 3,500 employees work across the organization.
