It's a continuously maintained database of tax rates, rules, jurisdictional boundaries, and product taxability matrices, kept current by a team of in-house tax professionals and data scientists. Indirect tax compliance is enormously complex. Thousands of overlapping jurisdictions with rules that change constantly. That complexity creates high switching costs and steady demand for Vertex's solutions.

About 4,800 customers use the platform, including over half of the Fortune 500. Retail, manufacturing, technology, telecom, and financial services are the primary verticals. Annual revenue is roughly $600 million. Cloud and subscription revenue grow at double-digit rates and now represent the majority. Gross margins sit around 68%.
