Company Overview

Salesforce is the world's biggest CRM software company. It runs a cloud platform covering sales, service, marketing, commerce, and analytics. Marc Benioff founded it in 1999 in San Francisco, and it basically invented the software-as-a-service model that most enterprise tech companies now follow.

The main product, Sales Cloud, lets companies manage leads, deals, and customer accounts in one place. Service Cloud handles customer support with case management and routing across channels. Then there's Marketing Cloud for email automation and customer journeys, and Commerce Cloud for running online storefronts in both B2B and B2C.

What really locks customers in is the Lightning Platform. It's a low-code environment where companies build custom apps on top of Salesforce infrastructure. The AppExchange marketplace has thousands of third-party apps, which creates a massive ecosystem that's hard to leave. MuleSoft handles API integrations, and Tableau covers data visualization and business intelligence.

Salesforce sells to companies of all sizes. A small startup might use Salesforce Essentials. A Fortune 500 company might run its entire operation on the platform. The typical pattern is that a customer starts with one product, then adds more over time. That drives net revenue retention above 100%.

The business model is subscription-based, mostly annual or multi-year contracts. Professional services and Trailhead training add some revenue on top. Gross margins consistently run above 75%, and operating margins have improved a lot recently after a company-wide restructuring focused on profitable growth.

The $27.7 billion Slack acquisition in 2021 was a big move. It put Salesforce into enterprise collaboration and connected internal productivity with customer-facing workflows on a single platform.

On the AI front, Salesforce has pushed hard with Einstein AI and more recently Einstein GPT and Agentforce. These embed generative AI and autonomous agents across every cloud product. Think automated tasks, personalized content, and predictive insights. The company pulls in over $35 billion in annual revenue, employs roughly 72,000 people, and serves more than 150,000 organizations worldwide.
