Company overview

Fortinet is one of the world's largest cybersecurity companies. It provides integrated network security, cloud security, and security operations solutions for enterprises, service providers, and governments globally. Ken and Michael Xie, two brothers, founded it in 2000 in Sunnyvale, California. Fortinet is best known for FortiGate, the most shipped firewall appliance in the world by unit volume.

The competitive edge starts with proprietary ASIC technology. These are custom security processors that deliver firewall throughput, SSL inspection, and threat detection at speeds that general-purpose CPUs can't match. That hardware advantage pairs with the Fortinet Security Fabric, a platform integrating over 50 security and networking products into one automated framework. It spans firewalls, SD-WAN, SASE, endpoint protection, email security, cloud workload protection, SIEM, SOAR, and zero-trust network access.

FortiGuard Labs is the in-house threat intelligence operation. It processes billions of events daily across a global sensor network and employs hundreds of threat researchers and data scientists. The real-time feeds, signatures, and AI detection models protect FortiGate appliances and cloud services.

Fortinet has pushed into cloud-delivered security with FortiSASE, combining SD-WAN, secure web gateway, ZTNA, and CASB in one cloud service. This transition is shifting revenue toward higher recurring streams. The company serves over 775,000 customers, generates roughly $6 billion in annual revenue, and keeps operating margins above 25%. About 14,000 employees work across the organization. Gartner consistently ranks Fortinet as a Leader for Network Firewalls and SD-WAN.
