Company Overview

Appian provides a low-code automation platform for building business applications, automating processes, and managing cases. Matt Calkins, Robert Kramer, Marc Wilson, and Michael Beckley founded it in 1999 in McLean, Virginia. Appian was an early pioneer of low-code development, letting organizations build enterprise-grade applications much faster than traditional coding.

The Appian Platform brings together low-code development, process automation, robotic process automation, AI, and data fabric in one environment. Users design applications with visual, drag-and-drop interfaces and minimal hand-coding. The platform generates the underlying architecture, data models, and integrations. These aren't toy apps either. They meet security, scalability, and compliance requirements for highly regulated industries.

Process Automation covers business process management, workflow orchestration, and intelligent document processing. Case management handles complex, unstructured work that doesn't follow fixed workflows. Think regulatory investigations, insurance claims, or customer complaints. These situations require flexibility that rigid workflow tools can't provide.

Data Fabric is a virtual data layer that connects and governs data across enterprise systems without requiring data migration. Applications can access data from ERP, CRM, databases, and legacy systems as if it were a single unified source. For large enterprises with complex, distributed data across many systems, this is a significant capability.

Appian targets large enterprises and government agencies. Financial services, healthcare, insurance, government, and life sciences are the strongest verticals. Implementation runs through partners like Deloitte, PwC, KPMG, and Accenture. Government contracts, particularly with the US Department of Defense and federal agencies, represent a meaningful revenue stream.

Annual revenue is roughly $620 million with gross margins around 74%. Revenue mixes subscriptions with professional services, and subscriptions represent a growing majority. The company continues transitioning customers from on-premises to cloud.

Appian AI provides intelligent document processing, natural language process design, and AI-powered data insights. The AI Copilot lets users design applications, build process models, and create data queries using natural language.

With about 2,300 employees, Appian serves organizations that need to modernize operations and automate complex workflows without ripping out their existing technology.
