Company Overview
Autodesk makes design and engineering software for architecture, engineering, construction, manufacturing, and media. John Walker founded it in 1982 in San Francisco. Autodesk created AutoCAD, one of the most influential software products ever, which changed how engineers and architects do computer-aided design.
The AEC portfolio includes AutoCAD, Revit for Building Information Modeling, Civil 3D for civil engineering, Navisworks for project review, and the Autodesk Construction Cloud for design collaboration and project management. Revit has become an industry standard for architects and structural engineers, enabling 3D modeling with built-in intelligence about materials, quantities, and building performance.
For manufacturing, there's Fusion for integrated CAD/CAM/CAE design, Inventor for 3D mechanical design, and Moldflow for plastic injection simulation. Fusion is the flagship cloud product that unifies design, engineering, simulation, and manufacturing. In media and entertainment, Maya and 3ds Max are industry standards for 3D animation, visual effects, and game development.
The company completed a full transition from perpetual licenses to subscriptions. This was one of the most significant business model shifts in enterprise software. It turned a cyclical revenue base into predictable recurring revenue, stabilized cash flows, and expanded the market by lowering upfront costs. Subscriptions now make up virtually all of the roughly $6 billion in annual revenue.
Gross margins run around 92%, some of the highest in the industry. Operating margins keep expanding as the subscription transition matures.
Autodesk sells to individual architects, small design firms, mid-market construction companies, and the world's largest infrastructure enterprises. Collections, which are bundled product suites for AEC, manufacturing, and entertainment, push average revenue per user higher by encouraging multi-product adoption.
AI investment is growing through Autodesk AI. This includes generative design that optimizes based on constraints, automated drawing generation, and AI-assisted project planning. The Construction Cloud uses analytics and AI to help contractors predict project risks and optimize scheduling.
With about 14,000 employees serving customers in over 180 countries, Autodesk's software designs everything from buildings and bridges to cars and Oscar-winning films. It's essential infrastructure for the industries that shape the physical world.
