Company overview

Samsara is a connected operations platform that uses IoT to improve safety, efficiency, and sustainability for physical operations. It serves transportation, logistics, construction, field services, energy, and manufacturing companies. Sanjit Biswas and John Bicket founded it in 2015 in San Francisco. The idea was to bring cloud computing and data analytics to the massive physical economy that digital transformation had mostly missed.

The Connected Operations Cloud combines IoT hardware, cloud software, and AI analytics in one platform. The hardware lineup includes AI-enabled dash cameras, GPS vehicle trackers, environmental sensors, equipment monitors, and site cameras. These devices continuously stream data on video, location, temperature, motion, fuel consumption, and engine diagnostics to the cloud, where everything gets processed and displayed through a unified dashboard.

Fleet management provides GPS tracking, route optimization, fuel management, ELD compliance, and driver inspection reports. Video-based safety uses AI to detect risky behaviors like distracted driving, tailgating, and rolling stops, then coaches drivers through real-time alerts and post-incident video review. Equipment monitoring tracks utilization and maintenance needs for construction equipment, generators, and industrial assets. Site visibility offers remote monitoring of facilities and job sites.

AI analyzes billions of data points from the hardware fleet. Features include automatic incident detection, proactive maintenance alerts, fuel waste identification, and safety benchmarking. Samsara reports that customers have collectively prevented millions of accidents using the safety features.

The company targets organizations with physical operations and mobile workforces. Customer acquisition often starts with one use case like fleet tracking, then expands to additional modules. Net revenue retention stays above 115%.

Annual recurring revenue is roughly $1.2 billion with gross margins around 74%. Revenue is subscription-based. Hardware sells at or below cost to drive recurring software revenue. The company has reached positive operating margins.

With about 3,000 employees and over 50,000 customers managing millions of connected assets, Samsara leads the connected operations space by bridging physical-world operations with digital intelligence.
