Summary
Manhattan Associates closed its third quarter of 2022 with record third-quarter revenue of $198.1 million, up 17.1% from $169.2 million in the same quarter a year earlier. Cloud subscriptions did the heavy lifting, rising to $45.3 million from $32.2 million, while services revenue climbed to $103.4 million from $88.2 million. Software license revenue slipped to $6.4 million from $8.5 million, a decline management attributes to the market's clear preference for cloud-native products. Maintenance revenue was $35.8 million and hardware contributed $7.2 million. For the nine months ended September 30, 2022, total revenue reached $569.0 million, up 15.6% from $492.1 million.
The profit picture was less flattering. Operating income fell to $36.8 million from $42.4 million, and operating margin dropped to 18.6% from 25.1%. Net income came in at $29.7 million, down 19.0% from $36.7 million, and diluted earnings per share were $0.47 against $0.57. Management points to deliberate spending: research and development expense was $29.4 million in the quarter, and the cost of cloud subscriptions, maintenance and services rose $24.9 million, driven by compensation, performance-based pay, travel and hosting costs. The nine-month figures look steadier. Operating income was $108.0 million, up 0.8%, net income was $91.1 million, up 1.3%, and diluted EPS was $1.43, up 2.1%. Nine-month operating margin was 19.0%, down from 21.8%.
Cash generation slowed. Operating cash flow was $39.9 million in the quarter, down 33.1% from $59.7 million, and $124.4 million for the nine months, down 14.3% from $145.1 million. The company attributes the decline to higher tax payments tied to the U.S. Tax Cuts and Jobs Act requirement to capitalize research and development costs, which adds roughly $25 million to $30 million of income tax payments in 2022. Capital expenditures were $1.9 million in the quarter, up from $1.0 million. Deferred revenue rose 24.1% to $169.4 million, and remaining performance obligations jumped 69.0% to $969.6 million. Currency headwinds trimmed about 4 percentage points from revenue and about 7 percentage points from RPO growth. Cash stood at $197.1 million at September 30, 2022, down from $213.8 million at June 30, 2022, and days sales outstanding moved to 67 days from 63 days. Manhattan repurchased 346,620 shares for $50.0 million in the quarter, $150.1 million worth over nine months, and replenished its buyback authority to $75.0 million in October 2022.
Guidance for the full year 2022 was raised for revenue and earnings per share, though management says the outlook accounts for continued volatility in the global macro environment. Adjusted diluted earnings per share guidance, a non-GAAP measure, sits at $2.43 to $2.45 for the full year. Longer-range guideposts put cloud revenue at $172 million for 2022, $232 million for 2023 and $328 million for 2024, with RPO of $1,040 million, $1,350 million and $1,700 million across those years. The company flags a long list of risks: inflation, global macro volatility, extended sales cycles on large cloud deals, foreign exchange swings, competition, the war in Ukraine, disruption in the retail sector, software errors and IT failures, and the challenge of hiring and retaining skilled staff. Roughly 31% of revenue came from outside the United States, so currency and geopolitical conditions carry real weight. Management also notes that the cloud transition spreads revenue recognition over subscription terms, which makes quarterly bookings and revenue harder to forecast.

Risks
Operating income decreased 13.3% in FY2022 Q3 versus FY2021 Q3 and operating margin fell to 18.6% from 25.1%, even as revenue rose 17.1%. MD&A attributes this to strategic investment in R&D, cloud operations headcount, infrastructure, and consulting hiring that impacts margins until new resources ramp to full utilization.
MD&A states global geopolitical and economic volatility likely will continue to shape customers' and prospects' enterprise software buying decisions, and that current sales cycles for large cloud subscriptions could be extended given the challenging global macro environment. It also notes the U.S. and Western European economies have a meaningful impact because Gartner estimates nearly 75% of supply chain software spend is in those regions.
MD&A reports the strengthening U.S. dollar negatively impacted total revenue by approximately 4% in the three months ended September 30, 2022 and negatively impacted RPO growth by approximately 7% from September 30, 2021 to September 30, 2022, with particular pressure from the Pound Sterling and Euro.
MD&A says the pace of market adoption of cloud subscriptions, with revenue recognized over the subscription period rather than up front, combined with extended lead times for new business, can cause uncertainty and impact the ability to accurately forecast bookings and revenues from quarter to quarter and over the longer term.
Operating cash flow decreased 33.1% in FY2022 Q3 versus FY2021 Q3 and 14.3% in FY2022 year to date versus FY2021 year to date. MD&A says the YTD decline was mainly due to increased tax payments from the U.S. Tax Cuts and Jobs Act requirement to capitalize R&D costs for tax purposes beginning in 2022.
MD&A highlights active hiring to fulfill customer demand and rising compensation and performance-based compensation across cost of revenue and operating expenses, while forward-looking factors include the ability to attract and retain highly skilled employees.
