Summary

Dropbox began fiscal 2025 with a familiar split: revenue shrank while profit and margins improved. First quarter revenue was $624.7 million, down 1.0% from the prior-year quarter. Management tied the decline to upsell weakness and churn in Teams plans and to the strategic decision to significantly reduce investment in FormSwift, along with a $2.8 million negative foreign exchange impact. Total ARR was $2.552 billion, down 0.2% year over year and flat on a constant currency basis. Paying users were 18.16 million, flat year over year, and average revenue per paying user decreased. The installed base is not expanding, and pricing is not rising fast enough to offset that. Management pointed to strength in Individual plans, offset by elevated churn and down-sell pressure in Teams plans.

Profitability improved. Gross profit was $508.0 million, down 3.3% from $525.5 million, and gross margin fell to 81.3% from 83.2%. Higher infrastructure costs tied to the datacenter refresh cycle and a smaller depreciation benefit from the 2024 useful-life change both weighed on the metric. Operating income rose 28.1% to $183.8 million, and operating margin expanded to 29.4% from 22.7%. Net income was $150.3 million, up 13.6%, and diluted EPS was $0.51, up from $0.39. Non-GAAP operating margin was 41.7%, up from 36.5%, while non-GAAP gross margin was 82.9%, down from 84.6%. Non-GAAP net income was $207.1 million, up from $196.7 million, and non-GAAP diluted net income per share was $0.70, up from $0.58. Much of the margin gain came from lower operating expenses after the October 2024 workforce reduction, not from growth.

Cash flow softened. Operating cash flow was $153.8 million, down 12.4% from $175.5 million. Capital expenditures were just $0.1 million, down 98.9% from $9.2 million, so free cash flow was $153.7 million, down from $166.3 million. The operating cash flow decline reflected the third tranche lease termination fee on the San Francisco headquarters and payments tied to the 2024 workforce reduction. Deferred revenue was $739.8 million, flat versus the prior-year quarter. Cash, cash equivalents and short-term investments ended at $1,180.0 million, and the company repurchased 18.1 million Class A shares for $504.1 million during the quarter.

The quarterly release offered no specific next-quarter or full-year financial guidance, saying that forward-looking guidance would come on the earnings call. The MD&A does lay out management's near-term expectations. Dropbox expects Total ARR may decline slightly, reflecting the FormSwift pullback and Teams upsell weakness. It warns that revenue and revenue growth will keep decreasing if average revenue per paying user does not improve. Cost of revenue is expected to rise in absolute dollars, gross margin to stay relatively constant, research and development and sales and marketing to fall in absolute dollars and as a percentage of revenue, and free cash flow to generally increase in the near term. Capital expenditures are expected to remain consistent.

The risks are easy to see. Teams plans face elevated churn, and Sign battles a challenging competitive environment. Foreign exchange moves, tariffs and retaliatory actions, geopolitical issues and shifts in government policy can all weigh on results. Dropbox also flags its ability to retain and upgrade paying users, convert registered users into paying users, protect data, avoid service disruption and compete. The company is leaning on cost cuts and buybacks while it tries to steady ARR and prove that Dash and its other product bets can restart growth.
