Summary
Fortinet opened fiscal 2026 with first quarter revenue of $1.85 billion, up 20.1% from the prior-year quarter. Product revenue grew 41% year over year and service revenue grew 11%, which pulled hardware back toward the center of the story after several quarters of service-led growth. Billings, a non-GAAP measure, rose 31% to $2.09 billion. The geographic base stayed broad: EMEA produced 42% of revenue and grew 25%, the Americas 40% and 17%, and APAC 18% and 15%. Management tied the demand to secure networking hardware, term licenses, AI infrastructure deployments, technology upgrades and upsell activity, and noted that recent pricing changes added a low single digit contribution to product revenue growth.
Profitability improved faster than the top line. Gross profit was $1.49 billion, up 19.1%, but gross margin slipped to 80.3%, down 0.7 percentage points, as revenue mix shifted 5.1 percentage points from service to product. Operating income rose 27.8% to $580.0 million, and operating margin reached 31.4%, up 1.9 percentage points. Operating expenses fell 2.6 percentage points as a share of revenue because revenue growth outpaced personnel costs. Net income was $534.5 million, up 23.3%, and diluted EPS came in at $0.72, up 28.6%. On a non-GAAP basis, operating margin was 35.8% and diluted EPS was $0.82.
Cash generation set records. Operating cash flow was $1.08 billion, up 24.8% from the prior-year quarter, and capital expenditures were $70.6 million, up 6.2%. Free cash flow, a non-GAAP measure, reached $1.01 billion. Deferred revenue, current portion, stood at $3.73 billion, up 11.6%, and remaining performance obligations were $7.45 billion, up 14.8%. Cash, cash equivalents and short-term and long-term investments totaled $3.63 billion. The company repurchased 10.6 million shares for $826.9 million and repaid the full $500.0 million of its 2026 Senior Notes at maturity in March 2026.
Guidance points to continued expansion. For the second quarter of 2026, Fortinet guides revenue of $1.830 billion to $1.930 billion, billings of $2.090 billion to $2.190 billion, a non-GAAP operating margin of 33.0% to 35.0%, and diluted non-GAAP net income per share of $0.72 to $0.76. For the full fiscal year 2026, the company guides revenue of $7.710 billion to $7.870 billion, service revenue of $5.090 billion to $5.150 billion, billings of $8.800 billion to $9.100 billion, and diluted non-GAAP net income per share of $3.10 to $3.16. The release states that Fortinet raised its 2026 revenue guidance to 15% year over year growth. Product news included FortiOS 8.0, new FortiGate G Series appliances, and collaboration with AI companies including Anthropic and OpenAI.
The risk list is specific. A global shortage of memory chips is constraining availability and raising costs, and Fortinet is implementing price increases that may not fully offset higher input costs. Management expects the full-year 2026 operating margin to decrease compared to 2025 as sales and marketing, research and development, and real estate spending outpace revenue growth, and it expects sales and marketing expenses to grow faster than revenue. Capital expenditures are estimated at $350 million to $550 million for 2026. Inventory purchase commitments climbed to $1.37 billion from $810.6 million at December 31, 2025. Headcount reached 15,311, up 5% from 14,556 a year earlier. Tariffs and trade policy changes, longer sales cycles on large deals, and competition round out the concerns.

Risks
MD&A states the rapid global build-out of AI infrastructure has created a global shortage of memory chips used in certain products, and Fortinet is experiencing constraints on availability that may delay production and delivery and increase sourcing costs. Inventory purchase commitments totaled $1.37 billion as of March 31, 2026, an increase of $555.0 million compared to $810.6 million as of December 31, 2025.
Total gross margin decreased 0.7 percentage points during the three months ended March 31, 2026 compared to the same period last year, driven by a revenue mix shift to lower-margin product revenue. MD&A says product gross margin may decline if price increases do not fully offset rising hardware component costs, and full-year 2026 operating margin is expected to decrease compared to 2025 as expenses outpace revenue growth.
Six distributor customers accounted for 66% of total net accounts receivable in the aggregate as of March 31, 2026, and one distributor accounted for 28% of total net accounts receivable as of March 31, 2026. Substantially all revenue is generated through channel partners, exposing Fortinet to credit and liquidity risk from a limited number of distributors.
Fortinet faces intense competition from Check Point, Cisco, CrowdStrike, Palo Alto Networks, Zscaler and others, with some competitors focusing on cloud-delivered security and bundling products. Vendor consolidation during customer refresh cycles may cause current customers to purchase from competitors on an ongoing basis.
Growth strategy depends on increasing sales to large and medium-sized businesses, service providers and government organizations, which often have longer sales cycles, in some cases longer than 12 months, and more complex contract terms. MD&A notes sales and marketing expenses increased 17% during the three months ended March 31, 2026 and may grow faster than revenue.
Risk factors and MD&A highlight that U.S. tariffs and any retaliatory tariffs could increase product costs, disrupt supply chains and affect customer sentiment. Changes in trade policy, customs classifications or tariff exemptions could adversely affect gross margin, primarily for hardware sales to U.S. customers.
Fortinet depends on senior management, particularly Co-Founders Ken Xie and Michael Xie, and on senior sales leaders, and their loss could delay strategic objectives. Competition for skilled sales, support and engineering personnel is intense in the San Francisco Bay Area and Vancouver, Canada, and immigration law changes may harm hiring from other countries.
Fortinet plans to increase data center, PoP, office and warehouse capacity, with 2026 capital expenditures estimated between approximately $350 million and $550 million. Construction risks include delays, data center equipment availability, budget changes, power access, permitting and failure to meet customer service level agreements.
Fortinet has ongoing tax audits in the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany and several other foreign jurisdictions focused on allocation of profits among legal entities. OECD tax proposals and changes in U.S. or international tax law could increase its worldwide effective tax rate.
Adverse economic conditions, including a possible recession, inflation or stagflation, changing interest rates and reduced information technology spending, could lead to longer sales cycles, lower prices, higher component costs and higher default rates among channel partners. MD&A says worsening economic conditions may decrease sales productivity and lower growth.
