Elastic is the company behind Elasticsearch, the world's most popular open-source search and analytics engine. Shay Banon founded it in 2012 in San Francisco. It's built on the Elasticsearch project that Banon originally created in 2010 as a distributed search engine based on Apache Lucene.

The Elastic Stack has four core pieces: Elasticsearch for search and analytics, Kibana for visualization, Logstash for data ingestion, and Beats for lightweight data shipping. Together they form a platform for ingesting, storing, searching, analyzing, and visualizing data at scale. Elastic Cloud is the managed service on AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud.

Three primary solution areas define the business. Elastic Search covers enterprise search, application search, workplace search, and e-commerce search. The Elasticsearch Relevance Engine combines traditional keyword search with vector search and AI ranking, making Elastic a key technology for retrieval-augmented generation in AI applications. Elastic Observability provides unified visibility across logs, metrics, traces, and synthetic monitoring. Elastic Security delivers SIEM, endpoint detection and response, and threat intelligence for processing massive security data volumes at speed.

The competitive advantage is speed, scalability, and flexibility. Elasticsearch handles petabytes of data with sub-second query times. That makes it the go-to backend for search-intensive applications, from website search to log analytics to security event correlation. Over 20,000 organizations use Elastic. Netflix, Uber, and Tinder are among the companies that rely on the technology for search.

Annual revenue is roughly $1.3 billion. Cloud subscriptions are consumption-based and the fastest-growing segment. Self-managed subscriptions form the rest. Gross margins run about 74%. Net revenue retention exceeds 110%.

Elastic has leaned into AI, positioning Elasticsearch as a vector database for AI applications. ELSER (Elastic Learned Sparse EncodeR) and integrations with large language models let organizations build semantic search and RAG applications on existing Elastic infrastructure.
