Summary

Appian reported total revenue of $88.9 million for the first quarter of fiscal 2021, up 12.7% from a year earlier. Subscription sales did the heavy lifting. Subscriptions revenue reached $63.8 million, up 26% year over year, and rose to 71.8% of total revenue from 64.0% in the prior-year quarter. Cloud subscription revenue climbed 38% to $39.1 million. Professional services revenue slipped to $25.1 million. Management tied part of that decline to a deliberate handoff, since partners such as KPMG, PwC, Accenture and Deloitte now perform more implementation work. That lifts subscription revenue without adding services revenue. Government agencies accounted for 20.9% of revenue, up from 14.9%, while 32.2% of revenue came from outside the United States, down from 33.5%.

Gross profit rose 19.3% to $65.3 million, and gross margin reached 73.5%, up 4.1 points. Subscription gross margin improved to 90.8%. Professional services gross margin fell to 29.6% as that revenue line shrank against higher personnel costs. Below the gross line, results weakened. Operating loss widened to $10.5 million, and operating margin slipped to negative 11.8%. Net loss widened to $13.6 million, and diluted loss per share widened to $0.19.

Non-GAAP results looked far better than the GAAP numbers. Non-GAAP operating loss was $0.9 million, against a loss of $5.1 million a year earlier, and adjusted EBITDA was positive at $0.4 million after a loss of $3.6 million. Non-GAAP net loss was $4.0 million, or $0.06 per share, versus $8.2 million, or $0.12 per share. Stock-based compensation explains most of the gap. It totaled $7.9 million, up from $3.5 million. General and administrative expense jumped 45.7%, including $3.3 million of accelerated stock-based compensation tied to the vesting of the 2019 CEO grant. Research and development expense rose 29.0% and sales and marketing expense grew 5.3%.

Cash trends improved even as GAAP losses widened. Operating cash flow was negative $2.8 million for the quarter, against negative $3.9 million a year earlier. Purchases of property and equipment were $0.5 million, up 131.7%. Cash, cash equivalents and investments stood at $255.1 million as of March 31, 2021. Deferred revenue, current portion, was $107.9 million, up 32.7% year over year, and remaining performance obligations were $202.5 million, up 17.4%. The cloud subscription revenue retention rate ticked up to 118% from 115%. Accounts receivable fell $12.7 million on collections and billing timing. No single end-customer accounted for more than 10% of revenue.

Guidance points to continued cloud momentum. For the second quarter of 2021, management guided cloud subscription revenue of $41.0 million to $41.5 million, growth of 39% to 40%. The second-quarter adjusted EBITDA loss is expected to land between $16.0 million and $14.0 million, with non-GAAP net loss per share of $0.26 to $0.23. For the full 2021 fiscal year, cloud subscription revenue is guided to $171.0 million to $172.0 million, growth of 32% to 33%. The full-year adjusted EBITDA loss is guided to $38.0 million to $36.0 million, and non-GAAP net loss per share to $0.68 to $0.65.

Several risks hang over the story. Sales cycles are long and variable, so revenue can swing on the timing of large contracts. Appian competes in low-code and automation markets against larger vendors. The model depends on continued low-code adoption and on shifting revenue toward subscriptions, a transition that has already reduced professional services revenue. COVID-19 remains a wildcard. Management said the pandemic had not yet caused a meaningful adverse impact on results through March 31, 2021, but warned of reduced demand and longer sales cycles ahead. Partner agreements with KPMG, PwC, Accenture and Deloitte have indefinite terms and can be terminated for convenience by either party. Foreign exchange losses of $3.0 million weighed on other expense.

Risks

MEDIUMMacroeconomic

Management states that through March 31, 2021 it has not seen a meaningful adverse impact from COVID-19 on financial position, results of operations, cash flows or liquidity, but warns there may be impacts in 2021 and beyond from reduced demand for its products and services and longer sales cycles. The ultimate impact is not estimable and depends on factors outside the company's control.

MEDIUMPartner Reliance

Professional services revenue decreased 11.7% in the three months ended March 31, 2021 versus the prior-year period, and professional services gross margin declined to 29.6% from 34.1%, as the company increasingly relies on KPMG, PwC, Accenture and Deloitte to perform services. Those strategic partner agreements have indefinite terms and may be terminated for convenience by either party, and the shift of professional services personnel into customer success roles reduces billable capacity.

MEDIUMSales Cycle

The business model requires significant customer acquisition spend, including sales representatives who generally take more than one year to become productive given the length of the sales cycle. Sales and marketing personnel headcount rose 15.4% from March 31, 2020 to March 31, 2021 and sales and marketing expense rose 5.3% for the quarter, so any elongation of customer decision cycles would delay the return on that investment.

MEDIUMConcentration Risk

Revenue from government agencies represented 20.9% of total revenue in the three months ended March 31, 2021 compared to 14.9% in the three months ended March 31, 2020, increasing exposure to government budget cycles, procurement timing and public-sector spending volatility. No single end-customer accounted for more than 10% of total revenue in either period.

MEDIUMGross Margin

Total gross margin rose 4.1 percentage points to 73.5% in the three months ended March 31, 2021, helped by a higher subscriptions mix, but management cautions that improved professional services margins from reduced subcontractor usage and fewer in-person engagements may not be indicative of future trends. Gross margin is expected to fluctuate in the short term based on revenue mix and cloud hosting costs.

MEDIUMOperating Expense Growth

General and administrative expense rose 45.7% in the three months ended March 31, 2021 versus the prior-year period, including a $3.3 million acceleration of stock-based compensation from the 2019 CEO grant plus a 12.8% increase in G&A headcount and higher legal fees, while research and development expense rose 29.0% with R&D headcount up 19.3%. Total operating expenses rose 85.3% as a percentage of revenue versus 80.3%, widening the operating loss.

LOWLiquidity

Management states existing cash, short-term investments and the $20.0 million revolving line of credit should fund requirements for at least the next 12 months, but warns that additional financing may be needed and may not be available on acceptable terms. Any equity or equity-linked raise could be dilutive, and any debt incurred may be senior to equity holders and contain restrictive covenants.
