Summary

Paycom closed fiscal 2025 first quarter with revenue of $530.5 million, up 6.1% year over year. Gross profit rose 5.9% to $445.9 million, and gross margin was 84.1%, down 0.2 percentage points. The top line held up, but GAAP profitability fell sharply. Operating income dropped 35.2% to $185.1 million, and operating margin was 34.9%, down 22.3 percentage points. Net income fell 43.6% to $139.4 million. Diluted EPS was $2.48, down 43.2%.

The GAAP decline needs context. The prior-year quarter included a large benefit tied to the forfeiture of a CEO performance award, which reduced prior-year administrative expenses. That prior-year item does not repeat. On a non-GAAP basis, net income rose to $157.7 million, or $2.80 per diluted share, from $146.6 million, or $2.59 per diluted share. Adjusted EBITDA reached $253.2 million, compared with $229.5 million. Adjusted EBITDA margin was 47.7%, compared with 45.9%. The company also generated operating cash flow of $182.5 million, up 22.8%, while capital expenditures fell 21.0% to $37.7 million. Deferred revenue rose 8.5% to $148.7 million.

Management pointed to new client additions, additional application sales to existing clients, and pricing as revenue drivers. Client attrition among smaller clients partially offset those gains. The timing of the January 1, 2025 holiday shifted payroll processing into late 2024 and muted the year-over-year increase in recurring revenue. Interest income on funds held for clients declined as lower interest rates outweighed a larger average client fund balance. Research and development expenses increased on higher employee-related costs, while sales and marketing expenses fell on lower advertising spend. General and administrative expenses rose mostly because the prior-year period had the CEO award benefit. The company continues to position automation as a differentiator for client retention and long-term revenue growth.

For the full fiscal year ending December 31, 2025, Paycom guided adjusted EBITDA to a range of $843.0 million to $858.0 million, representing a margin of approximately 42% at the midpoint. The company expects interest on funds held for clients of approximately $110 million for the full fiscal year. It guided to growth in recurring and other revenue. Management also said 2025 capital expenditures should be generally consistent with the prior year on a total dollar basis. The outlook assumes continued investment in automation and client retention. Paycom did not reconcile its forward-looking adjusted EBITDA range to net income, citing uncertainty around depreciation and amortization, interest expense, taxes, stock-based compensation and other items.

Risks remain substantial. The HCM market is highly competitive, and Paycom faces pressure from new entrants and disruptive technologies. The company lists cybersecurity and data privacy as major risks, along with its reliance on key executives and its ability to hire and retain technical and sales talent. The 10-Q also flags risks related to changes in laws and government regulations, compliance with data privacy laws, and the ability to develop new applications and keep pace with technological developments. Macroeconomic conditions and labor market changes can affect client headcount because some services are billed per employee. The company also notes that its Beti automation reduces billable payroll corrections and unscheduled payroll runs, which can weigh on revenue. Seasonality is another factor, since first-quarter and fourth-quarter recurring revenues tend to be higher than other quarters.

The quarter's cash generation improved. Operating cash flow and capital expenditures both moved in favorable directions. The company returned cash to shareholders through dividends and share repurchases, though the repurchases were tied to tax withholding on equity vesting. Paycom's balance sheet remains conservative, with no outstanding borrowings under its revolving credit facility. The main question for investors is whether the non-GAAP momentum can continue while GAAP comparisons normalize later in 2025.

Risks

HIGHMacroeconomic

Adverse economic and market conditions, including changes in global trade policies and tariffs, increased unemployment, inflation, reduced access to credit, higher interest rates, and geopolitical conflicts, could reduce demand for HCM applications, delay client spending, or cause clients to renegotiate contracts. The filing also notes that an economic decline could lower revenue from unscheduled payroll runs and per-employee fees, lengthen sales cycles, and increase price competition.

HIGHInterest Rate

A decreasing interest rate environment would compress interest earned on funds held for clients and corporate funds and could adversely affect operating results. Interest on funds held for clients decreased 10.0% for the three months ended March 31, 2025 compared to the same period in 2024 due to lower interest rates, partially offset by an increase in average funds held for client balances.

MEDIUMLabor Market

Because the company charges clients on a per-employee basis for certain services, increases or decreases in client headcount directly affect results. Macroeconomic pressures such as inflation and changes in interest rates impact clients' hiring practices and, in turn, impact revenues.

MEDIUMProduct Automation

Beti is designed to eliminate payroll errors that lead to billable corrections and unscheduled payroll runs, and the company has experienced a reduction in these activities that historically would otherwise generate additional revenue. This dynamic can affect recurring revenue growth as automation adoption increases.

MEDIUMCompetition

The HCM software market is highly competitive, rapidly evolving, and fragmented, with expected continued intensity from new entrants, disruptive technologies, and aggressive pricing and client retention strategies. These market pressures can directly affect recurring revenue growth and the ability to attract and retain clients.

MEDIUMClient Attrition

Client attrition, particularly among smaller clients, partially offset favorable revenue drivers for the three months ended March 31, 2025. Continued attrition among smaller clients could reduce the benefit of new client additions and expanded sales to existing clients.

MEDIUMGovernment Funding

Uncertainty regarding Congress and the President reaching agreement on federal budgetary and spending matters, particularly a prolonged government shutdown, may adversely affect the U.S. economy. Certain clients rely on government resources to fund operations, and a prolonged shutdown may affect their ability to make timely payments.

MEDIUMExpense Growth

Research and development expenses increased 23.4% for the three months ended March 31, 2025 compared to the same period in 2024 due to an increase in employee-related expenses. The company generally expects research and development expenses, exclusive of stock-based compensation, to continue to increase as it invests in growth and automation.
