Summary
MongoDB closed FY2024 Q2 with total revenue of $423.8 million, up 39.6% from the prior-year quarter. Gross profit rose 47.9% to $318.5 million. Gross margin expanded to 75.1%, up 4.2 percentage points. The operating loss narrowed to $49.0 million from $114.8 million a year earlier. Net loss narrowed to $37.6 million from $118.9 million. Operating margin improved to negative 11.6%, up 26.3 percentage points. On a year-to-date basis, revenue reached $792.1 million, up 34.5% from the first six months of fiscal 2023. These results reflect continued demand for the company's developer data platform.
Operational momentum remained strong. MongoDB ended the quarter with over 45,000 customers, up from over 37,000 a year earlier. Direct sales customers exceeded 6,800, compared with over 5,400. Atlas customers topped 43,500, versus over 35,500. Customers spending at least $100,000 in annualized recurring revenue or annualized monthly recurring revenue reached 1,855, up from 1,462. The net ARR expansion rate stayed above 120%. MongoDB Atlas represented 63% of total Q2 revenue and grew 38% year over year. Subscription revenue was 97% of total revenue, while services contributed 3%. Direct Sales Customers accounted for 88% of subscription revenue. The company launched Atlas Vector Search, Atlas Stream Processing, and general availability of Relational Migrator. It expanded its Google Cloud partnership and introduced an AI Innovators Program. Atlas for Industries launched with financial services and public sector offerings. Headcount grew to 4,626 from 4,240. Management said MongoDB is at the early stages of AI powering the next wave of application development and believes its unified platform supports both foundational and AI-specific needs.
Cash generation showed improvement. Operating cash flow was negative $25.3 million in the quarter, compared with negative $44.7 million a year earlier. For the first six months, operating cash flow was positive $28.4 million, versus negative $33.1 million. Capital expenditures fell 75.7% to $0.6 million in the quarter. Deferred revenue was $368.6 million, down 1.8% from the prior-year quarter. Free cash flow was negative $27.3 million, compared with negative $48.6 million a year earlier. Non-GAAP gross margin was 78%, compared with 73% a year earlier. Non-GAAP income from operations was $79.1 million, compared with a non-GAAP loss from operations of $12.4 million. Non-GAAP net income was $76.7 million, or $0.93 per share, compared with a non-GAAP net loss of $15.6 million, or $0.23 per share. Non-GAAP operating margin was 19%, compared with negative 4%.
Guidance points to continued growth but with macro pressure. For the third quarter of fiscal 2024, MongoDB expects non-GAAP income from operations of $41.0 million to $44.0 million and non-GAAP net income per share of $0.47 to $0.50. For the full fiscal year 2024, guidance calls for non-GAAP income from operations of $189.0 million to $197.0 million and non-GAAP net income per share of $2.27 to $2.35. Management noted that the macroeconomic environment continued to negatively impact the business, including slower than historical growth rates for existing Atlas applications. The company expects these headwinds to persist for the remainder of the year. Risks include economic downturns, rising interest rates, inflation, volatility in the banking sector, competition, and the company's history of losses. MongoDB also said it may continue to experience negative cash flows from operations in the future.

Risks
Adverse macroeconomic conditions, including slower or negative economic growth, higher inflation and higher interest rates, continued to negatively impact the business during the six months ended July 31, 2023. MongoDB experienced slower than historical growth rates for existing MongoDB Atlas applications and expects macroeconomic headwinds on growth rate for existing Atlas applications in the short term.
MongoDB derives more than the majority of revenue from MongoDB Atlas, which represented 63% of total revenue for the three months ended July 31, 2023. Because Atlas is primarily usage-based, visibility into the timing of revenue recognition is limited and actual results may differ from forecasts.
The business depends substantially on customers renewing subscriptions and expanding usage. A majority of subscription contracts were one year in duration in fiscal year 2023, customers have no obligation to renew, and retention may decline due to factors such as budget constraints, competing solutions or dissatisfaction.
MongoDB faces intense competition from legacy database providers such as IBM, Microsoft and Oracle, and from public cloud providers such as AWS, Google Cloud Platform and Microsoft Azure. Larger competitors can bundle competing products, offer low or no-cost alternatives and may respond to market conditions by lowering prices.
The conditional conversion feature of the 2026 Notes was triggered during the three months ended July 31, 2023, and the notes are convertible at the holders' option from August 1, 2023 through October 31, 2023. If holders elect to convert, MongoDB may be required to settle a portion or all of the conversion obligation in cash, which could adversely affect liquidity.
The sales cycle is generally three to nine months but can extend to more than a year for some customers. Rising inflation and interest rates and global economic uncertainty may cause potential customers to reduce or delay technology spending, which could further extend the sales cycle and increase variability in quarterly revenue.
MongoDB may be required to commit significant resources to developing next-generation solutions that use artificial intelligence and machine learning. The rapid evolution of AI presents reputational, regulatory and research and development cost risks, and failure to adopt such technologies could create a competitive disadvantage.
Industry publications have reported ransomware attacks on MongoDB instances, which MongoDB believes were successful because users of its Community Server offering failed to properly turn on recommended security settings. A security breach or incident could cause customers to reduce or terminate use of the software and lead to litigation, regulatory investigations and reputational damage.
MongoDB is subject to stringent and evolving data privacy and security laws, including the GDPR, UK GDPR, CCPA, LGPD and APPI, and new SEC cybersecurity disclosure rules that begin applying with the 2023 Form 10-K and Form 8-K requirements starting December 18, 2023. Compliance failures could lead to regulatory investigations, litigation, fines and reputational harm.
The SSPL has not been approved by the Open Source Initiative and is not included in the Free Software Foundation's list of free software licenses, which may deter adoption of Community Server. A court could hold the SSPL or AGPL unenforceable, allowing others to use MongoDB software to compete without the license restrictions.
MongoDB plans to expand its sales and marketing organization and is substantially dependent on its direct sales force. There is significant competition for experienced sales professionals, new hires require significant training and time before achieving full productivity, and recent hires may not become as productive as quickly as expected.
