Summary
Alarm.com closed fiscal 2021 with a stronger top line but softer profit. Fourth quarter total revenue rose 17.9% to $195.3 million from $165.6 million a year earlier. SaaS and license revenue, the recurring core of the business, climbed 15.4% to $121.7 million from $105.5 million. For the full year, total revenue increased 21.2% to $749.0 million, and SaaS and license revenue increased 17.1% to $460.4 million.
Profitability moved the other way. Fourth quarter GAAP net income attributable to common stockholders fell 42.7% to $9.1 million from $16.0 million, and diluted EPS dropped to $0.18 from $0.31. Operating income for the quarter was $10.76 million, down 19.6% from $13.38 million, and the operating margin was 5.5%, down from 8.1%. Management blamed the squeeze on higher shipping costs and inventory component costs tied to global supply chain challenges. Non-GAAP adjusted EBITDA slipped 3.3% to $31.3 million, and non-GAAP adjusted net income fell 2.4% to $22.6 million, or $0.43 per diluted share, against $0.45.
Full year profitability was mixed. Diluted EPS for the full year fell to $1.01 from $1.53. Full year operating income still grew 9.4% to $61.57 million. The prior year carried a $24.7 million gain on the sale of an investment in one of the company's platform partners, a boost that did not repeat. Non-GAAP adjusted EBITDA for the year rose 13.7% to $142.5 million, and non-GAAP adjusted net income rose 15.8% to $103.5 million, or $1.99 per diluted share.
Cash generation cooled in the fourth quarter. Operating cash flow was $19.96 million, down 43.6% from $35.41 million, while non-GAAP free cash flow was $17.8 million against $29.9 million. For the full year operating cash flow was $103.16 million, up 1.1% from $102.08 million, and free cash flow was $92.1 million against $85.9 million. Capital expenditures were $2.12 million for the quarter, down 61.1% from $5.46 million, and $11.06 million for the year, down 31.5% from $16.14 million. Deferred revenue ended the quarter at $14.84 million, up 18.4% from $12.53 million. Inventory purchases tied to supply chain concerns weighed on operating cash flow. Cash and cash equivalents stood at $710.6 million as of December 31, 2021, up from $253.5 million a year earlier, lifted largely by the January 2021 issuance of $500.0 million of 0% convertible senior notes due 2026.
Guidance points to slower growth ahead. For the first quarter of 2022, the company expects SaaS and license revenue of $121.0 million to $121.2 million. For the full year 2022 it expects SaaS and license revenue of $508.0 million to $509.0 million. Full year 2022 non-GAAP adjusted EBITDA is guided to $149.0 million to $150.0 million, and non-GAAP adjusted net income attributable to common stockholders to $104.3 million to $105.0 million, or $1.86 to $1.88 per diluted share on roughly 56.0 million weighted average diluted shares. That share count includes about 3.4 million shares tied to the 2026 Notes under the adoption of ASU 2020-06, which is expected to trim adjusted net income per diluted share by about $0.12 to $0.13.
Operationally, Alarm.com kept expanding its platform. It launched the Smart Thermostat HD, rolled out Enterprise Dashboards for multi-location commercial subscribers, and said its EnergyHub subsidiary now works with 60 of North America's leading energy utilities, with nearly 700,000 grid-edge devices connected to its DERMS platform. The SaaS and license revenue renewal rate held at 94% in 2021. The company flagged real risks: unusual geopolitical uncertainty, continuing COVID-19 pandemic uncertainty, and significant global supply chain uncertainty. Tariffs of up to 25% on certain products made in China and higher freight and component costs pressure hardware margins, though management expects hardware revenue margins to improve in 2022 after price increases. Planned capital expenditures for the next 12 months are $10.0 million to $12.0 million.

Risks
The COVID-19 pandemic continues to disrupt the hardware supply chain through limited inventory, increased lead times and shipping delays, and can restrict service providers from meeting property owners. Management states that if the economy fails to fully recover or new shutdowns occur, SaaS and license revenue growth rate may be lower in future periods with a corresponding reduction in hardware revenue.
Cost of hardware and other revenue increased 38% to $239.1 million in 2021 from $173.9 million in 2020, and cost of hardware and other revenue as a percentage of hardware and other revenue worsened to 83% in 2021 from 77% in 2020. The increase was driven by higher freight shipments, expedited shipping and inventory component costs, and U.S. tariffs on China imports could further raise costs.
A substantial portion of revenue comes from a limited number of service provider partners, and the loss of or significant reduction in orders from one or more major partners would decrease revenue and profitability. The transition of Vivint to its own home automation product and the ADT patent license arrangement generate lower per-customer fees than SaaS solutions.
The company faces patent infringement lawsuits from Vivint, Causam and EcoFactor, including an ITC complaint filed by Causam, and general and administrative expense increased $1.8 million in 2021 due to intellectual property litigation. A negative outcome could require costly licenses, damages or an injunction limiting operations.
The company issued $500.0 million of 0% convertible senior notes due 2026 in January 2021, which may require cash settlement upon conversion or repurchase upon a fundamental change. Interest expense increased $13.4 million in 2021 compared to 2020, primarily from amortization of the debt discount and debt issuance costs related to the 2026 Notes, and conversion could dilute stockholders.
The connected property market is highly competitive and includes large technology companies such as Amazon, Google, Apple and Samsung, as well as security and broadband providers. Competitors may use aggressive tactics such as selling at a discount or bundling competing products at no charge, which could reduce revenue and market share.
Revenue grew from $420.5 million in 2018 to $749.0 million in 2021 and full-time employees grew from 884 as of December 31, 2018 to 1,500 as of December 31, 2021, straining managerial, operational and financial resources. The company does not expect to achieve similar growth rates in future periods and may fail to manage expansion effectively.
The business is subject to consumer protection, licensing, telemarketing and privacy laws, including the TCPA, and the company has incurred costs to settle alleged TCPA violations. Changes in laws or failure to comply could result in fines, revocation of licenses or reduced subscriber acquisition opportunities.
